The 18th European Workshop on Voluntary Action: Engaging Communities
8-11 October 2009, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
We are delighted to announce that this year’s Volonteurope Conference will be delivered in partnership with the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Sarajevo, the historical capital of the country, has been chosen as the location of the 18th Volonteurope Conference. Participants will once again have an opportunity to take an active part in workshops, visits and activities. We are expecting to welcome participants – new and returning – to this year’s conference and are particularly looking forward to significant presence of delegates from the Balkan States and the region of Central and Eastern Europe.
During the conference we will also be celebrating the ACE Awards, which, presented during a gala evening in Sarajevo, will for the third time recognise the invaluable contribution of outstanding volunteers and volunteer-involving organisations to social cohesion and Active Citizenship across Europe. OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina
OSCE is one of the most important regional security institutions in the world. With 56 participating states, it is active in five regions – South Eastern Europe, Eastern Europe, South Caucasus, Central Asia and Western Europe.
This non-profit-making agency deals with three dimensions of security, namely human, politico-military, as well as economic and environmental. OSCE’s work focuses mainly on democratisation, the work of the civil society, education, arms control, anti-terrorism, anti-trafficking, in addition to a range of economic and environmental activities.
The work of the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina is based on the principle that a democratic society, underpinned by the rule of law, is the best guarantor of durable peace and security.
The Mission plays a key role in elections, protection of human rights and regional stabilisation. It helps in supporting the establishment of institutions and processes that will ensure Bosnia and Herzegovina’s survival as an independent state. Such a state should have a political structure that produces dynamic and effective governance at all levels, and that guarantees the protection of human rights and the rule of law.
