What happened

Each event team was led by a young volunteer between the age 16 – 25. Their work inspired thousands of volunteers to make a real difference in their local community. A huge thank you to those who took part!

Underwater cleans

The sun shone and volunteers got stuck into making huge transformations. In Plymouth and Ipswich for example, experienced divers carried out underwater cleans, finding items such as tyres, shopping trolleys and even a couple of motorbikes!

Clearing public spaces, building bridges

Elsewhere, groups of volunteers made huge differences to public spaces: clearing shrubs and bushes, renovating play equipment, planting bulbs, and even constructing new paths and bridges.

Entertainment and art!

Many of the event teams had arranged entertainment for the volunteers and in some locations artists turned rubbish into sculptures to brighten the area even further.

More information about each of the eighteen projects will be added over the next couple of days. Watch this space.

Background to the event:

This was an exciting one-off campaign day which raised awareness about environmental issues, while enabling young people to improve their communities.

Big Clean Up events took place across England and Wales on Sunday, 17 September giving up to 6,000 people an opportunity to take action, get involved and improve our environment.

For more information about the campaign go to www.itv.com/bigcleanup.

This campaign is funded by 'V' the UK's new youth-led charity set up to encourage more young people to volunteer.

Also visit www.cleanuptheworld.org - a major United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) campaign, where achievements each year are celebrated on the third weekend in September. ITV's Big Clean Up campaign was timed to coincide and highlight this UN campaign.
