How are young people portrayed in the media?
What can be done to change this perception?
Young people are often unfairly stereotyped in the media - on the
television, in newspapers and on the internet. Richard Bacon
emphasises that "with so many news stories focusing on youth crime
it's never been more important for young people to have a say in
their representation in the media". This plan helps young people
understand how the media works so that they can challenge these
stereotypes.
The BBC Radio 5 live and Capital FM presenter knows what he is
talking about. "As a presenter I know first hand the power and
influence the media has, especially in the portrayal of young
people. This Youth and Media lesson plan gives students ideas on
how to be represented in a more positive way in the local media. By
getting involved in CSV Make a Difference Day, young people can
challenge negative stereotypes by showing they can have a positive
impact in the community," he says.
Young people are encouraged to set up a volunteering activity for
CSV Make a Difference Day and are given guidance on writing a press
release for the local and national media to publicise their
activity.
