Start by thinking through these questions and noting down your
answers:
1. What local issues matter to you?
Is there enough for you to do in your area? Are there enough
recycling facilities? Do older people have a bad perception of
young people? Are you concerned for the homeless or the elderly?
Is there a local park that needs cleaning up, or an area of
wasteland that would make a great skate park? Does the local youth
centre need some fresh paint on its walls or could the sports club
do with being more youth-friendly?
2. What skills do you have?
Make a list. Maybe you are great with computers?
Or you can paint or draw? Maybe you play an instrument, sing or
DJ? Perhaps you play a sport which you could teach to others? Any
skills you might have can be put to good use making a difference in
your community.
3. Who else might be able to
help?
Make a list of friends and family members who might be able to
help. Make a list of their names and write the skills that each
person has. Perhaps your mum is an excellent cook? What hobbies
do your friends have?
4. How will you make a difference?
How could you and your friends and family put your skills
to good use and improve things in your area? Look back over your
notes from the other questions and think about what activity you
can do to help take action on the issues that matter. Don't forget
- you its only one day!
If you are short on idea's you might find it useful to look at some
case studies explaining what other people have done to Make a
Difference.
