The SHINE programme aims to improve pupils’ academic achievements, self-esteem and motivation, and to provide pupils with positive role models who can introduce them to the world of higher education.
Building on the legacy of CSV Learning Together, SHINE recruits and trains university students to support pupils in schools across London.
SHINE currently places students from Greenwich University, London Metropolitan University, and the University of New York in London primary schools. They support pupils in a number of ways including:
• Working one-to-one with pupils who need extra support
• Providing general classroom assistance
• Offering specialist skills – ie – language, art, sport
• Helping with or running homework clubs
• Working as reading partners
Students generally spend half a day each week in their schools throughout the academic year. There are clear benefits for pupils, students and schools, including higher attainment for pupils, work and skills experience for students, and more community involvement in schools.
