I thought volunteering wasn't very sociable?
GO events are always very sociable. You'll be working alongside other volunteers the whole day and can chat away to your heart's content while you work. Our volunteers often cite "meeting new people" as the aspect of the events they enjoyed the most. GO is about having fun as well as making a difference. We've even had couples first meet each other at GO events!
I bet the events are really hard to get to.
GO operates all over the cities they operate in. GO London events can be got to by tube, while GO Manchester and GO Reading events are accessible by all kinds of public transport. You'll get to see parts of your city you may never even have heard of before!
Will I be safe at the events?
The venues that GO events take place in are given a thorough health and safety check prior to the day of the event to ensure that the environment is safe for volunteers to work in. Any necessary changes are made before the day, with various recommendations being made for the day itself. Venue representatives and GO event leaders will be responsible for your safety and you'll never be asked to do any risky tasks.
I'm about to start a care course and I want to gain experience of working with children / the disabled.
To make volunteering as easy and accessible as possible we have no application procedure for GO, which means our volunteers are not police checked. So we cannot work with any vulnerable groups on any of our events. If you are interested in volunteering with children you may be interested in our Mentoring or Allies projects or contact your local volunteer bureaux for opportunities near you.
But I've never volunteered before!
You don't need any experience or specific skills to come along to GO events. We have trained event leaders present at all times to explain tasks and answer any questions you may have. All you need is willingness to get involved and have a go!
I'm not sure I'll be available every Saturday so I suppose I can't sign up.
You don't have to commit to any minimum number of events to take part in GO. You're free to drop in and drop out of the project as your schedule allows. Come to the events nearest you, to all the painting events if that's your thing, or just when you have a bit of free time at a weekend. You'll never be hassled for not attending enough events!
I've volunteered before but never got to see the results of my efforts.
You'll always be able to see a visible difference at the end of a GO event, all thanks to you. Whether you've transformed a garden from an overgrown jungle into a contender for Britain in Bloom, or painted a counselling room in a charity for victims of crime to make it warm and welcoming, you'll always leave the day with a sense of enormous satisfaction!
