Venue: Tyssen Primary School in Hackney
Tyssen Primary is on the northern edge of Hackney borough and is accessible by train and bus – there is no nearby tube. Despite this, 75 volunteers turned out to help brighten up the students’ environment by painting murals all over the school.
Tyssen had been in Special Measures for two years. Following a change of staff, they have worked their way out of this category but one aspect of improvement they were struggling with was physical environment: the school has a large playground but it is solely tarmac with no playground games painted on the surface, no colour and not much greenery.

Nicki, who’d never volunteered before said “The day totally exceeded my expectations. Its been an awesome event”.
Every single volunteer who attended rated the event as ‘Fun’ or ‘Good Fun’ and 100% said they were ‘Satisfied’ or ‘Very Satisfied’ at the end. 90% of attendees said they would recommend GO to a friend or colleague. 41% of attendees were from a non-UK-white background.

Deputy Head Gary Boyd said after the event “The kids will go mad!! It will change their play habits and make playtime a more constructive time. The children will be amazed!”
