The CSV Somerset Leisure Access Partnership (SLAP) matches local part-time volunteers with individuals with a learning disability to share a mutual interest. |
SLAP volunteers
How do you spend your spare time? Are you the active, outdoors type or are you an indoors person? Would rather watch the latest movies or trek across the moors? Do you like to get muddy on the rugby pitch or sit down to a video game? Perhaps you’re a weekend gardener or a watercolour artist? Do you like to spend time at the gym or messing about in boats? Is shopping your thing?
Whatever your choices, imagine what it would be like if you were unable to follow your interests. Imagine not even knowing what you could do in your spare time.
That’s the situation many adults with learning disabilities face. Research shows that many people with this disability rarely enjoy the sort of activities that able-bodied people take for granted and only mix with those with similar disabilities.
With a little help, adults with learning disabilities can change this.
Who can be a SLAP volunteer?
If you’re over 18, prepared to commit at least two hours every fortnight for at least six months and willing to help someone living in Somerset, we want to hear from you. If you can give us more of your time on a regular basis that’s great.
What support do volunteers get?
There are two staff will guide you and arrange your personal induction and training plan. This may include NVQ accredited training, or learning how to sign. During your induction, you can meet and work alongside adults with learning disabilities so you gain experience and confidence.
