Hearts and Minds in the South West is part of a national heritage project, which aims to work with secondary schools to develop their understanding of their local heritage.
One school will be selected each year to work on a school grounds based heritage project.
Each scheme will be unique to the school and can be carried out in any curriculum subject, but it is essential that it is communicated throughout the whole school and its community, including celebrating the work that is produced during the year.
Schools will work with other organisations, such as museums, galleries and local history societies, to build a greater understanding of the potential contribution that local heritage can bring to curriculum activity. There is also the chance for schools to work directly with artists and other professionals, to learn new skills and bring young people’s ideas to life.
In 2005-2006 CSV worked with Westhaven School in Uphill, North Somerset, focusing on “Water Heritage” including the Severn Estuary, Somerset Levels and rivers. The whole school was involved and the project rolled out across all curriculum areas.
Hearts and Minds is managed nationally by Learning through Landscapes, and delivered through partner organisations based in four regions: CSV Environment in the South West; Wildlife Trusts in the North East and Yorkshire; and Learning through Landscapes in London.
