University challenged with new community volunteer scheme

Staff at Aston University rose to the challenge recently as they swapped their day jobs for gardening gloves to pilot a new community volunteering scheme.
Raising the Roof

Time to Play on Puzzle Island…

CSV’s Outdoor Play & Learning team in Bristol are busy creating an outdoor adventurous guided discovery game that can be played in any outdoor space! Puzzle Island is a new innovative game which will stimulate the sense of adventure and outdoor exploration in any young participant.
Successful Engagement of Birmingham Asylum Seekers
12th April 2008
Engage, CSV’s unique Home Office funded project to get asylum seekers volunteering in their local community, reached an end at Easter after a successful few months of community action. A small ceremony in central Birmingham took place to show gratitude to the participants of the project who have come from many different countries but now reside in the Birmingham area as they wait for the results of their applications.
Budding Gardeners begin L-Plate course

Spring is springing into life and a bright new initiative, L-Plate Gardening, is starting up to coincide with the growing season of 2008. L-Plate Gardening is a structured programme of learning sessions in organic gardening methods being run weekly from now until September by CSV Environment’s Surinder Kaur-Sohanpal. In addition to the practical training Surinder will provide, the group of budding gardeners and veg-growers will visit established organic gardens, and should expect to sell some of their home-grown produce at farmers' markets in the local area.
St Benedict’s take Action over the long-term

The children at St Benedict’s Infant School in Small Heath, Birmingham have been working hard to transform their concrete playground into a green haven, with the help of CSV Environment and three years of Action Earth grants.
Less oil on troubled waters

CSV Run a Muck has introduced a groundbreaking new recycling service in Birmingham, with the start of their waste cooking oil doorstep collection scheme. This unique service offers householders in the east of the city the chance to turn their waste cooking oil into useful biodiesel, and at the same time reduce pollution in local streams and rivers.
Street Champions take action on the Wash Brook

Street Champions Marching On

L-Plate Gardening course is launched in King’s Norton

Bristol Students achieve John Muir Award with CSV Environment

Six students from Bristol University achieved the John Muir Discovery Award through volunteering for CSV. The Award aims to encourage the discovery and conservation of wild places in a spirit of fun, adventure and exploration, is non-competitive and open to all.
Street Champions scheme gets national recognition

Top TV gardener launches major green campaign

BBC Ground Force presenter Kirsty King joined the Chairman of the Environment Agency Sir John Harman and CSV Deputy Executive Director Bill Garland to launch Action Earth 2006 at Freightliners City Farm, north London. Action Earth provides community groups with small grants to help them set-up and run projects to improve their enviroment.
Hartwood Enterprises branches out to Buckingham Palace

Hartwood Enterprises volunteers Dan Baker and Lee Dibble have been to Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen.
The lads from Hartcliffe and Withywood, South Bristol, joined CSV to learn about landscaping and conservation and to improve their local environment. But on Thursday, 3 November they swapped their boots for suits to join volunteers from around the country to celebrate Year of the Volunteer.
