CSV's Hartwood Enterprises are now the proud owners of a green roof, established on top of a storage container at their yard at Rudgewood Close, Hartcliffe, Bristol.
Bristol architects Stride Treglown designed a wooden frame, drainage and a planting system, and donated money for drainage layers, growing material and plants, as well as providing five members of staff to help build the roof and set it in place. The new roof will have a number of environmental benefits, helping to reduce the amount of rainwater run-off and cooling the container in the summer.
Ken Kennedy, Development Officer for Hartwood Enterprises, said "The yard is a meeting point for our volunteers and trainees, and the green roof will be a landmark."
Stride Treglown have been involved with CSV Environment for several months through a grant fund it holds with the Quartet Community Foundation. Recently an award of £2,000 was given to pay for 12 young volunteers to get trained, with the aim of helping them to find employment. They have also taken on Hartwood Enterprises to carry out maintenance work on the grounds around their offices in Clifton.
Kevin Steer, Chairman of Stride Treglown, said "It's important that businesses like ours take the lead in helping young local people gain skills that are much needed."
