Give a “Bird” a home this Valentine’s Day!

Single Londoners will be heading to Greenwich Ecology Park in South London, on Sunday 13 February to meet like-minded, passionate and friendly people, whilst helping to maintain London’s most beautiful home for birds and wildlife, through the UK volunteering charity, CSV.

CSV’s GO London events are a popular gateway for people from all walks of life to interact; making it ideal for many singles people to meet. In fact a number of people have met their life partners through volunteering with GO London.

Long time volunteers Charles and Rachel met in 2004 at an event and married in August 2010.  Charles says: “Our eyes met over a pair of shears and trembling ivy at a Go London event in Stoke Newington.  It was love at first sight for me but to grab Rachel’s attention I had to spruce up my image! It wasn’t until the GO London Christmas dinner eighteen months later that we actually got to know each other properly. We’ve been together ever since!

“Volunteering has changed both our lives; not only did we find each other but we increased our friendship and we’ve helped to maintain some of the most beautiful open spaces in London. We have started our own book club and walking group to continue meeting new people. We still volunteer together every month for CSV’s GO London and it’s fantastic to meet someone who shares my interest in the environment.”

So instead of staying in this Valentine’s weekend, why not sign up for an event at  Greenwich Ecology Park and help create homes for birds using recycled cable reels to make rafts in the outer lake. Canada Geese, Coots and Tufted ducks use these rafts as nesting areas and birds share the space to roost. Volunteers will be contributing to the tranquil environment in which thousands of different species call their home.

Mary Makoni, CSV’s GO London Project Manager, has seen people forge life long friendships as well as people meeting life partners. Ms Makoni says: “These events create opportunities for people in London to meet others who share the same passion for volunteering and the environment. This event isn’t exclusive to singles but fun for all the family to learn new skills and benefit the community.’’

GO London offers commitment-free volunteering opportunities to fit in with busy lifestyles. Events are held every weekend across London with activities varying from painting a mural in a local school, to creating community playgrounds, to coppicing woodland. There is something for everyone and the projects are a great way to learn new skills and meet new people.  You might just find a new passion or even meet the love of your life while you are at it!
