Growing Gains in Birmingham

Photograph of a group of laughing school-children enjoying the fruits of their labour! The Growing Gains project tackles the growing health issues faced by children with a poor diet through practical hands on experience and education.

Since 2003, CSV Environment has worked with 70 schools in Birmingham helping over 4,500 children to grow, harvest and cook healthy, nutritious food.

With CSV Environment’s help, children from schools across the city grow vegetables on schools grounds or local allotments and learn about the health benefits of fruit and vegetables. They then take their knowledge (and treats!) home with them, spreading the message to their families and the wider community.

As one year 6 student at Hawkesley School put it: “Gardening can help people grow in their minds.”

If you're based in Birmingham and you'd like to see Growing Gains at your local school, call Rob Tilling at CSV Environment on 0121 327 6055 or email rob@csvenvironment.org.uk.
