Puzzle Island Book

three images from the Puzzle Island Book. Colourful illustrations drawn in a child-like style. This book helps adults to facilitate a creative game that encourages children to build a relationship with an outdoor space through map making and independent discovery.

Outdoor play is essential to children’s social and physical development however in today’s society people are fearful of cars and strangers or too busy on computers or organised clubs to allow children the freedom to play outside in their communities. This has lead to children becoming detached from their outdoor spaces.

Puzzle Island, with an emphasis on child led exploration and fun, aims to get children to develop their imagination and gain confidence outdoors.

The way you use the book can be tailored to develop group unity, linked to the curriculum, linked to a specific theme, or can be used to simply encourage play.

In easy to follow chapters the book sets out how to play the game either in one afternoon or over many weeks. The process of the game is well described and the activities are set out in chapters based around settling in, creating and exploring the Puzzle Island as well as the themes of wind, sun and water.

This book is aimed at parents, playworkers, teachers or anyone working with children aged 4-12 years old.

There are over 60 games and activities ranging from crafts to nature play, including:

  • Making kaleidoscopes
  • Making music from water or stories from sticks
  • Imaginative story games
  • Outside cooking
  • Physical games

There is always something to inspire you and the children you work with.
