The Energy Challenge - Brian Cross

Brian Cross volunteers with the Energy Challenge project, run by CSV’s Retired and Senior Volunteers programme. He gives advice to elderly and vulnerable people on saving energy, keeping warm and saving money.

Brian says:

“I retired in February 2008 after working in engineering for nearly 50 years. I was aware that I had gained a host of experience which could easily count for nought unless I found some way to put it to use. Having ‘Googled’ a few key phrases I stumbled upon the Energy Challenge and after an initial phone call and interview I joined the organisation.

There followed a training programme - including a City & Guilds course, presentations to groups of prospective clients and a series of home visits. We, the volunteers, have been able to suggest a range of improvements from simple measures such as draught-proofing redundant chimneys to more ambitious schemes such as fitting replacement central heating boilers for which the client may be eligible for a 100% grant, and which we help the client to apply for.

I have gained personally in knowing that my training and experience is helping others less fortunate than I in suggesting measures to keep warm and healthy, and reduce their fuel bills in winter.

CSV RSVP is able to help not only the general public but also those, like myself, who have retired and wish to put their experience to some use. If you have a skill or interest which you wish to put into practice, then get in touch with your local office and speak to an organiser. There is a world of opportunity to get involved with, and you get out more than what you put in!”
