Through The Gate - Jimmy's Story

CSV works in partnership with West Yorkshire Probation Service matching volunteer mentors with ex-offenders to help them adjust to life after prison and break the cycle of re-offending.

When Jimmy, 40, left prison, CSV matched him with volunteer Josie. Jimmy has a history of drug abuse, and in the past had committed burglaries to fund his habit.

At first he was reluctant to meet with Josie, and only kept appointments to avoid breaking the terms of his probation. Gradually, though, he began to come around to the idea. He told us: “I was getting depressed, being stuck up there on the estate. I’ve found it hard. Meeting up with Josie lifted me up, made me feel good about myself. I’ve been able to talk to Josie in a way I’ve never talked with anyone before, not even family or friends.”

Jimmy hasn’t looked back. His meetings with Josie have helped him stay focussed, manage his finances, build self confidence and get on better with his family. He has not gone back to taking drugs and puts this down to Josie’s support: “I’m not burgling anymore, I’m off heroin. For the first time, I’ve come out of prison and not taken heroin… I’m 40 now and I want to make something of my life. I can go forward now.”
