Young People

Mentoring and befriending for young peopleVolunteer on one of our mentoring and befriending schemes for young people in care or with vulnerable young people and help a young person get a better start in life.

On average, just 12% of young people in local authority care gain 5 A-C grades at GCSE; when they leave care at 18, 30% do not find employment or further education; 45% have mental health issues compared to just 10% of the rest of the population.

A major problem for many young people is a lack of consistency in their relationships with adults as parents, foster carers, social workers and residential unit staff come and go. By offering guidance and friendship to a looked-after young person or to a vulnerable young person you could help provide stability. All it takes can be commitment, empathy and a couple of hours of your time each week.

Currently we have projects in London, Derby, Bristol and North Lanarkshire.

Could You Be A Role Model?

Allies in HounslowWe are currently looking for volunteers who can spend two hours a week supporting young people looked after by Hounslow Children’s Services in Hounslow, Gillingham, Essex and East Sussex.

These young people need volunteers they can rely on to visit them regularly, take them out and have fun. Above all they need someone they can talk to.

You will need patience, commitment and a good sense of humour and must be able to volunteer for a minimum of 18 months. We are particularly keen to hear from male volunteers to work with young men.
